Meet Vine St. Brewing Co. – And Enjoy their New Brews at Mike’s!
Vine St. Brewing Co. in Kansas City’s historic 18th & Vine Jazz District opened in June of 2023 – becoming the first Black-owned brewery in Missouri – and one of the few black-owned breweries in the Midwest.
The Vine St. Brewing brand was the brainchild of Kemet Coleman and was inspired by his passion for bringing people together. And Coleman’s brewing knowledge came from his time at Boulevard Brewing Company. At Blvd., Coleman witnessed how something as simple as a shared passion for beer could connect people.
He was determined to activate his vision for his own beer brand, Vine St. Brewing Co. A few others were essential in realizing Coleman’s vision and helped bring it to life – including brewers Woodie Bonds Jr. and Elliott Ivory, along with Director of Operations, Annie McGinnis.

Coleman and his team collaborated with numerous producers around the country to launch Vine St. Inspired by the national craft beer community’s passion for partnership, Vine St. Brewing Co. wanted to replicate a similar camaraderie on a local level. Coleman was determined to utilize the business to empower, uplift, and serve the community – which became integral and foundational characteristics of Vine St. Brewing Co.

Brew Kat Kölsch
Through special commemorative beer releases, Vine St. has helped shine a spotlight on multiple local businesses and community organizations. One of their first initiatives was the celebration of the Kansas City Public Library’s 150th anniversary. Other collaborators have included Andre’s Chocolates, the American Jazz Museum, the Black Pantry, and the National Black Brewers Association.
One of their newest brews, Brew Kat Kölsch, was inspired by a stray cat, Specs, who made the brewery her home. To celebrate its release, Vine St. donated a portion of the proceeds to KC Pet Project, an animal rescue organization that has found permanent or foster homes for almost 6,000 dogs and cats in 2023 alone.
The full Vine St. Brewing Co. experience can be had by visiting their castle-like historic headquarters at 21st and Vine. The 156-year-old stone building was originally a jail and later transitioned into the KC Street Department. After years of neglect, the striking stone building was abandoned in the 1970s.
Fortunately, Coleman and his team saw only possibilities in the dilapidated, graffiti-covered eyesore. In what might be one of the most remarkable historic architecture reclamations in KC history, the partners rescued what was left of the building and transformed it into a vibrant business – and affirming community space, a place where the neighborhood could gather and celebrate its growing vitality.
Today, Vine St. Brewing Co.’s products are not only available at the Vine St. location, they’re also available at Mike’s Wine and Spirits. In fact, Mike’s helped the brewery sell their first keg and became Vine Street’s first retail partner. Mike’s Wine & Spirits hopes to continue to spread the good word about Vine St. Brewing Co.’s top-flight products – and get those products into the hands of craft beer aficionados throughout the entire Kansas City Metro area.
